Sustainable District Development with Exemplary Character
Salamandergelände Worms
The waste disposal and construction company of the city of Worms is developing a forward-looking district on the former site of a well-known german shoe manufacturer. Buildings and infrastructure for multiple uses are being constructed on approximately 74,000 m²: In the north, there is an administration building, a daycare center, and a commercial kitchen that supplies Worms's children's and youth facilities. Along a central traffic axis in the northeastern section, there are workshops and warehouses. Opposite is a car repair shop, and the depot with storage and bulk goods areas is located to the south. The main fire station is located in the southwestern part of the site and includes a hall for disaster response and a training area.
The concept developed by Julius Berger International focuses on people's needs. Meeting places promote a sense of belonging, outdoor areas improve the microclimate, and a buffer zone to the adjacent residential area reduces visual and noise emissions.
The project is committed to high sustainability standards – from innovative energy concepts and circular construction to sustainable materials. DGNB certification is being sought for all buildings. The buildings are flexibly designed so that they can be converted at a later date with minimal effort.
Julius Berger International is responsible for the integrated design of the district buildings for HOAI phases 1 to 4 as well as the design, approval, and implementation planning for all infrastructure structures. We have also been entrusted with the advanced work phases 6 to 7 and the awarding of a general contractor, and we are responsible for construction supervision.
It was particularly important for the client to have a supplier at their side who is proficient in all specialist disciplines, offers all services from a single source, and can flexibly scale the number of staff on the project in both directions. Our interdisciplinary team ensures that all requirements are implemented efficiently and holistically. The goal is a sustainable, functional district that will serve as a model project beyond the city limits.
