Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge in Lagos, Nigeria
The Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge is the first cable-stayed bridge in West Africa – a landmark of the financial metropolis of Lagos. Julius Berger International was responsible for the architectural design, researching the optimal location and for the complete design and execution planning. In addition, our team of specialists organised the procurement of all materials and carried out the construction planning as well as the static calculations of the construction levels of this technically demanding project.
The bridge connects the Lekki and Ikoyi districts and was absolutely essential in order to relieve the existing bridges of some of their load. Julius Berger International designed the main bridge in segment construction and the foreshore bridge in panel construction: The 2x2-lane main bridge is 635 metres long and has an impressive 90-metre-high pylon in the middle, which supports the adjacent bridge spans via inclined steel cables. The spans between the bridge piers measure up to 112 metres. Two approach bridges were built on both sides adjacent to the main bridge, with a total length of 722 metres. A toll station was erected on one of these approaches and the approach was widened to make it 2x3 lanes.
The geometrical complexity of the bridge structure combined with the use of mainly precast concrete elements required our layout engineers to pay the utmost attention to every detail throughout the entire project. A challenge that they accepted and mastered with resounding success!
