
Rapid restoration of critical wastewater infrastructure
Renovation of the wastewater pumping station in Chernihiv
To stabilize urban wastewater disposal in Chernihiv, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit commissioned Julius Berger International GmbH with the planning and supervision of the rehabilitation of a severely damaged wastewater pumping station. Before its destruction, the facility was responsible for around 25 percent of the municipal wastewater, making it crucial for environmental and public health protection. Massive damage to the electrical infrastructure caused by military actions made rapid restoration urgently necessary. The extremely challenging security situation also required that the entire project be managed completely remotely.
Julius Berger International developed a modular, container-based interim solution that enabled a swift recommissioning while also preparing for later integration into a permanent infrastructure. The technical equipment includes a compact transformer station, high-performance transformers, an emergency power supply, and frequency-controlled pump management for energy-efficient and reliable plant operation. All electrical components are housed in certified containers, providing protected operating spaces. An underground cable duct and pipe bank system ensures safe, low-maintenance, and durable power distribution.
As Lead Designer Plus, Julius Berger International was responsible for planning, tendering, construction supervision, and reporting. Through structured project organization, technical expertise, and close coordination with local partners, a timely and cost-efficient solution was realized that sustainably stabilizes wastewater disposal, reduces environmental impact, and makes a significant contribution to the urban resilience of the city.
