
Modernized pollution load calculation & guideline assessment for sustainable water protection

As part of the wastewater levy declaration and to demonstrate compliance with minimum requirements, the municipality of Heidenrod commissioned Julius Berger International GmbH to update a pollution load calculation that was over 20 years old, as well as the associated impact assessment.
Julius Berger International completely redeveloped the pollution load calculation, adapting both the model structure and all input parameters to the current data status. The basis was the SMUSI model, which enables temporal mapping of rainwater, wastewater, and extraneous water flows, and quantitatively records relevant wastewater constituents. Data collection, digitization, and planning were consistently carried out in the QGIS geographic information system, allowing for structured preparation of network data and consistent data exchange with the client.
In addition to SMUSI, an impact assessment was conducted for the Morsbach and Seitzgraben water bodies in the catchment area, in accordance with the Hessian guideline for identifying ecologically critical water pollution caused by wastewater discharge. Proof calculations regarding hydraulic load as well as critical oxygen and ammonia-nitrogen concentrations were performed. Since the simplified approach showed deficiencies in both substance-related proofs, the extended proofs were also carried out.
Thanks to the expertise and high performance of the project team, Julius Berger International was able to reliably complete the tasks within the tight timeframe. This formed the basis for the timely extension of the water law discharge permit.
