Expressway in Abuja, Nigeria

- Design of civil structures
The expressway, linking the Nigerian capital to the international airport, is one of Abuja’s most important trunk roads.
Taking the original traffic concept dating from 1982 into consideration, the road widening project was intended to increase the safety and capacity of the two existing lanes.
The close coordination of all design activities and the simultaneous widening of the trunk road, while still in use, presented a particular challenge.
Three grade-separated intersections, shaped like two clover leaves and a trumpet, were designed and constructed. The project included the design of 28 road bridges and 4 pedestrian bridges.
